Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Calam and how it works.

Getting Started

What is Calam?

Calam is a mobile app that lets you make international voice calls over WiFi or cellular data while displaying your real mobile phone number as the caller ID. This means the person you're calling sees your actual number, not an unknown or blocked number.

How do I get started?

Getting started is simple: 1) Download Calam from the App Store or Google Play, 2) Sign up with your phone number and verify it via SMS, 3) Add credit to your wallet, and 4) Start making calls! The entire process takes less than 2 minutes.

Which devices are supported?

Calam is available for both iOS (iPhone) and Android devices. You'll need iOS 14 or later, or Android 8.0 or later. The app works on smartphones - tablets are not currently supported.

Do I need a SIM card to use Calam?

You need a phone number to register with Calam (for verification), but you don't need an active SIM card to make calls. Once registered, you can make calls over any WiFi or data connection, even if your SIM is from a different country or inactive.

Making Calls

How does caller ID work?

When you make a call with Calam, the recipient sees your verified mobile phone number as the caller ID - the same number you registered with. This makes it more likely they'll answer since it's not showing as "Unknown" or "No Caller ID".

What countries can I call?

Calam supports calls to over 200 countries and territories worldwide, including landlines and mobile phones. You can check the rates for any destination directly in the app before making a call.

Can people call me back on Calam?

Calam is currently for outgoing calls only. If someone tries to call back your number, it will ring on your regular phone line. We're working on incoming call support for a future update.

How is the call quality?

Calam uses HD Voice technology with advanced audio codecs to deliver crystal-clear call quality. As long as you have a stable internet connection (WiFi or 4G/5G), calls will sound as good as or better than traditional phone calls.

Can I use Calam while traveling abroad?

Absolutely! This is one of Calam's best use cases. When traveling, simply connect to any WiFi or use local data, and you can call home at our standard rates - no expensive international roaming fees. Your caller ID still shows your home number.

Pricing & Payments

How much does Calam cost?

Calam has no monthly fees or subscriptions. You simply add credit to your wallet and pay per minute when you make calls. Rates vary by destination - for example, calls to the US start at just 1.5¢/min to landlines. Check the app for specific rates.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept all major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express), as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay. All payments are processed securely through industry-standard encryption.

Does my credit expire?

No, your credit never expires as long as your account remains active. Use it whenever you need it - there's no pressure to use it within a certain timeframe.

Are there any hidden fees?

No hidden fees. The per-minute rate you see is what you pay. There are no connection fees, no monthly minimums, and no surcharges. Your balance only decreases when you're actively on a call.

Can I get a refund?

Unused credit can be refunded within 30 days of purchase. Contact our support team to request a refund. Please note that partial credit from used top-ups is not refundable.

Technical Questions

How much data does a call use?

A typical Calam call uses approximately 1MB per minute of data. This means a 10-minute call uses about 10MB. If you're on WiFi, this won't affect your mobile data plan at all.

Are my calls secure?

Yes, all calls made through Calam are encrypted end-to-end using industry-standard TLS encryption. Your conversations are private and secure.

Why can't I make calls?

If you're having trouble making calls, check that: 1) You have an active internet connection, 2) You have sufficient credit in your wallet, 3) The app has microphone permissions enabled, and 4) You're not in airplane mode. If issues persist, try restarting the app or contact support.

Can I use Calam on multiple devices?

Currently, Calam is tied to one device per phone number. If you get a new phone, simply log in with your phone number on the new device, and your account (including credit balance) will transfer automatically.
